Steve Jobs built a brand that long outlived him and ensured that Apple could thrive after he passed away in 2011.
He was aware that his time on earth was impermanent and that he could not afford to waste a minute.
Here is an excerpt from his famous Stanford commencement speech:
“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.
Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.
You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”
Steve kept his 20-year marriage to Laurene Powell Jobs very private but he may have applied the same value to their relationship that Jobs once said he applies to his business in a 60 Minutes interview:
“My model for business is The Beatles. They were four guys who kept each other kind of negative tendencies in check. They balanced each other and the total was greater than the sum of the parts. That’s how I see business: great things in business are never done by one person, they’re done by a team of people.”
He also mentioned in the interview when the Beatles were together they did brilliant work and when they split up they did great work but it was never the same.
Before Steve Jobs’ spiritual journey brought global attention to Neem Karoli Baba, an American named Richard Alpert had already become one of the most important bridges between the Indian saint and the West.
Alpert was a Harvard psychology professor who became deeply involved in research on psychedelics. But his search for a deeper understanding of consciousness eventually took him to India in 1967, where he met Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj-ji. That meeting changed the course of his life. Revered as one of Hanuman’s greatest devotees, Neem Karoli Baba inspired millions through his simple teachings of love, service, humility, and unwavering faith in God. Neem Karoli Baba, a Brahmin boy married off at eleven who walked out of that marriage within days and spent decades as a wandering sadhu. Born around 1900 in Akbarpur, he returned to family life only because his father insisted, eventually raising two sons and a daughter while his mind stayed elsewhere. In 1964 he built a small ashram at Kainchi with nothing but a Hanuman idol the idea of service.
Neem Karoli Baba became his guru, and Richard Alpert later became known as Ram Dass. He began sharing the spiritual lessons he had learned in India with audiences in the United States. His most famous work, “Be Here Now,” published in 1971, introduced millions of Western readers to meditation, yoga, Indian spirituality and the teachings associated with his guru.
The book became particularly influential among young Americans searching for an alternative to conventional ideas about life and spirituality. One of those readers was a young Steve Jobs.
Years later, in 1974, Jobs travelled to India with his friend Daniel Kottke, partly inspired by “Be Here Now” and hoping to meet Neem Karoli Baba at Kainchi Dham. By then, however, the spiritual teacher had already passed away in 1973. Jobs still visited the ashram and continued his search for spiritual understanding during his time in India.
This makes Ram Dass an important part of the story behind Neem Karoli Baba’s influence in the West. Long before Steve Jobs became one of the most recognised names in technology, Ram Dass was helping introduce Western audiences to the Indian spiritual traditions that had transformed his own life.
His journey shows how one meeting in India eventually reached far beyond an ashram in Uttarakhand, influencing a generation of Western spiritual seekers and, indirectly, people such as Steve Jobs.
Mark Zuckerberg made the same journey years later, reportedly on Jobs’s own advice, during Facebook’s roughest stretch before its IPO.
Larry Page visited Kainchi as part of a pilgrimage led by longtime devotee Larry Brilliant, the same trip that also took Jeffrey Skoll, eBay’s first president, to the ashram.
Julia Roberts never met Neem Karoli Baba in person. She came across a photograph of him instead, that single image is what pulled her toward Hinduism, a shift she later spoke about publicly around the release of Eat Pray Love.
In 2026, a film “Hanuman Ansh” on his life released on a two crore rupee budget, opened at 10 lakh which crossed 82 crore net in India within a month.
The team had no promotion budget at all, so instead of ads, they ran eight free community meals near theaters and let word spread from there.
