August 2023 is indeed a very special and unique month. The intensity of a Full Moon is already powerful, but during a blue moon, this energy is amplified.

The Aquarius Full Moon had arrived at the top of the month on August 1st. And as a lunar cycle is 29.5 days, we are set for another Full Moon on August 31st, a Blue Moon in the sign of Pisces.

The term Blue Moon refers to the second full moon in the same month. When people say “once in a blue moon”, they are speaking about this rare occurrence.

A Blue Moon is an infrequent celestial event and a highly auspicious time that holds extra power for renewal, spiritual evolution, transformation and healing, and of course it is simultaneusly a powerful opportunity for letting go of old patterns that prevent growth.

What colour is a blue moon?

Blue moons are not blue. Blue moons remain the same colour as any other full moon except in two rare cases. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon can turn blood red, lit only by the light that is bent around the Earth by its atmosphere onto the face of the Moon. As lunar eclipses occur only during full moons, and blue moons are one type of full moon, very rarely a blue moon turn red.

In extremely rare circumstances, the Moon can appear blue, e.g. when you look at the moon through a haze of dust particles can can be present from a recent volcanic eruption for example.

How often does a blue moon occur?

Normally blue moons come only about every two or three years. In 2018 unusually, we had two blue moons in one year and only two months apart – and one was a lunar eclipse! The next time we will get two blue moons in a year will be 2037.

You will most likely notice at the peak of the Blue Moon that your intuition, creativity, imagination, connection to the universe and spiritual gifts are heighened, and you will therefore find it much easier to realise even those goals during a Blue Moon that seemed to be out of reach up so far.

Astrological meaning of a Blue Moon

In astrology, a blue moon is seen as a unique occurrence because it represents an unusual event that disrupts the regular lunar cycle. A blue moon can also highlight areas where we must let go or make changes.

A Full Moon represents a state of wholeness. A state of total fulfilment and satisfaction where the energy of the Divine Mother is heightened and easier felt /accessible. To many ancient civilisations the moon was crucial to estimate the perfect time for sowing and harvesting.

Full Moon holds also tons of potential for spiritual evolution and that’s why it is highly recommended to even stay awake during the night and dedicate this time for Sadhana (Spiritual Practice). Our ancestors have been aware of this fact and that’s why they used to stay awake the entire night during a full moon .

From the scientifical point of view we are aware that the moon governs the ebb, flow and the tides. This applies especially during a full and a new moon when the moon falls in line with the earth and the sun which increases the gravitational force. Just like the moon changes its form our moods and feelings change and some people can find it challenging to deal with the highly charged energy of the full moon.

‘Lunacy’, the Moon and madness

“For millennia, there has been a widespread belief in the association between the Full Moon and extremes of behaviour linked with mental illness,” historian John J. Johnston writes in The Moon exhibition book. “The very word ‘lunatic’, now thankfully outmoded, is an indicator of the former pervasiveness of this conviction among the general public and medical professionals alike.”

Goddesses and Gods that are associated with the Moon

The Celtic Moon Goddess Rhiannon was born at the first Moon Rise and is known as the Divine Queen of Faeries. She is the Goddess of fertility, rebirth, wisdom, magick, transformation, beauty, artistic inspiration and poetry. The story of Rhiannon teaches us that with truth, patience, and love we can create change no matter how bleak life seems at the moment.

In Hinduism meanwhile the god Chandra embodies the movement and changing faces of the Moon, and is closely aligned with periods of sickness and health.

In one story, Chandra is cursed by 26 of his wives for spending too much time with the 27th wife. His resulting illness ‘waxes’ and ‘wanes’, echoing the cycle of the Moon.

Tsukuyomi, or also Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, is the moon deity in Japanese mythology. The addition of no-Mikoto to his name means, “The Great God Tsukuyomi.” Tsukuyomi means something like “moon-reading,” and it is linked back to a long time ago in Japan when people would sit up and gaze at the moon and read poetry. He is like the moon, in that he is beautiful, serene, caring for order and justice, but he is often portrayed as an evil character in Japanese mythology.

Selene, daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, was the personification of the moon. Her brother Helios shone as the sun, while her sister Eos was the goddess of the dawn. Though Selene had many consorts, the most famous of them was Endymion, a handsome young mortal. When Selene spied him sleeping in a cave, she immediately fell in love and asked Zeus to extend his sleep for all eternity.

The name “Selene” (Greek Σελήνη, translit. Selḗnē) was also the ancient Greek word meaning “moon.”
