The Spiritual Self, or the True Self, is the aspect of self that is always and already perfect, whole, fulfilled and satisfied as it is. You cannot satisfy this self by going somewhere or becoming something; you can only find happiness in this self by recognising it, awakening to it and being it.
One of the primary ways to awaken to the true self is through meditation, where we practice to dwell in the present moment “as it is” without looking to go anywhere or do anything, without trying to attain something.
The happiness of the true self or spiritual self is found simply by recognising it and resting in it. This is incredibly simple on one level, but the ego finds it challenging, as it involves letting go of everything we think we are and to temporarily “die to our illusory self”.

In the end, the status, outer appearance, position, recognition, obsessions and possessions do not matter very much.
What matters is how we feel inside our own HEART when no one is there.

The history of this shoot was later published by Stern as the book The Last Sitting in 1982 .
